Pumice Flat Campground is along the meandering upper Middle Fork of the San Joaquin River. The area offers great opportunities for fly fishing and hiking. Within a short distance are Minaret Falls and Starkweather Lake. A little more than a mile away are Devils Postpile National Monument and Sotcher Lake.
A narrow access road leads down into Red's Meadow and on to Pumice Flat Campground. While camping here drivers may bypass the Red's Meadow Shuttle Bus, but are still required to pay a $10 entrance fee. The shuttle only operates in summer. Pumice Flat Campground has 17 sites for RVs, trailers, and tents in a lodgepole pine forest. All the sites are first come, first served.
Pumice Flat Group Campground is located a short distance to the south on the opposite side of Minaret Summit Road.
Pumice Flat Group Campground has 4 group sites among the trees and well separated from one another. The campground is south of the main Pumice Flat Campground and on the opposite side of the road. Two of the group campsites can accommodate up to 20 people and 3 vehicles (maximum length 30 feet), another up to 30 people and 8 vehicles (maximum length 40 feet), and another up to 50 people and 10 vehicles (maximum length 40 feet). Each site has picnic tables, campfire rings, and food storage lockers.
Those camped at Pumice Flat Campground are close to the Devils Postpile and Reds Meadow with a variety of attractions for outdoor enthusiasts. Use the free shuttle to get from place to place anywhere in the Reds Meadow valley.
