Woodward Reservoir Regional Park Campground
Woodward Reservoir Regional Park, a Stanislaus County favorite, is 6 miles north of Oakdale. The 2,900-acre lake and its surrounding park have long been a popular family camping destination.
Woodward Reservoir
Visitors to the Woodward Reservoir enjoy great boating, water skiing, sailing, sailboarding, and fishing. Anglers have success fishing from shore or boat for largemouth bass, rainbow trout, and carp. Swimming is popular because of high summer temperatures. The park also features a go-kart track and a model airplane airfield. Wildlife around the reservoir include squirrels, rabbits, coyotes, and raccoons. In the sky watch for red-tail hawks, owls, geese, ducks, blue herons, and egrets.
Woodward Reservoir Regional Park Campground
Woodward Campground offers 180 campsites for RVs, trailers, and tents. All the sites at Egret Cove (Huckleberry Flat and T-Island) and at Muir Point have full hook-ups. Many of the campsites are pull-throughs. Some sites are lake-front but all are close to the water. A number of campsites are on the tip of a narrow peninsula known as T-Island, which is connected to the mainland by a causeway.
Primitive Campsites
While campsites at Egret Cove and Muir Point can be reserved, many other more primitive camping locations are first-come, first-served. These include camping at Fischer Point, Charlie's Point, and Mountain View Point. Restrooms and showers are provided at Muir Point (sites 128-147) and Mountain View Point (sites 148-187). Equestrian camping is permitted in undeveloped camping areas (A - FF).
During peak summer times the park can be hot, crowded, and lively. Those seeking a quieter camping experience with milder temperatures might consider visiting in the spring or fall.
Bodily Contact with Water Restrictions
Because the reservoir provides drinking water to Southern San Joaquin County, state regulations require that bodily contact with the reservoir water end after Labor Day Weekend and generally are not opened up again before Memorial Day weekend. During this period most boating is permitted, but swimming, wading, water skiing, kayaking, and similar activities with bodily contact with the water are prohibited.
Radio Controlled Model Airplane Field
The radio controlled model airplane landing field on the north side of the reservoir is operated and maintained by Radio Control Flyers Unlimited, Inc. out of Oakdale. They offer flying events at various times around the year. The airfield is available to the public.
