Sentinel Campground

Sentinel Campground is located at Cedar Grove near Road's End in Kings Canyon National Park. Cedar Grove is 30 miles from Grant Grove, down a winding canyon road with spectacular views of the Middle and South Forks of the Kings River. The campsites are near the South Fork of the Kings River in a beautiful, open conifer forest. Towering canyon walls rise on either side of the valley. Sentinel, Moraine, and Sheep Creek campgrounds are side by side and nearly identical.

Some campsites at Sentinel Campground will accommodate trailers up to 30 feet. All camps are provided with bear-proof lockers for storing food and any scented items. Nearby trails lead out to wonderful destinations such as Mist Falls, scenic views of the Sphinx (shown above), Bubbs Creek, and Paradise Valley. Vehicles over 22-feet long should enter the parks via Highway 180.

Reservations
Reservations: All campsites require reservation prior to arrival. Reservations for Sentinel Campground (unlike many others in the park) can be made up to 4 months in advance of your stay. Reservations open for the season on December 28, 2022 4 months in advance of the campground opening date of April 28, 2023.
Camping Limit: 14 nights from June 14 to September 14 with 30 days total per year

General Camping Information

Opening and closing dates of campgrounds are only estimates, usually dependent on weather conditions. Not all campsites can accommodate trailers or RVs of all lengths. If using a reservation website, check to be sure your vehicles will fit in the parking space for your campsite.

In order to prevent the spread of invasive insects, obtain firewood locally.

Attractions and Activities

Kings Canyon and Sequoia visitors have many wonderful places to explore in the parks. Campers at Sentinel Campground in Cedar Grove are close to great hiking trails, waterfalls, and good fishing in the Kings River.

  • Load up your day-pack and hit the trail for nearby Cedar Grove destinations such as Knapps's Cabin, Canyon View Lookout, and Roaring River Falls.
  • Participate in Ranger-led Programs at Grant Grove, Cedar Grove, Wuksachi Lodge, and John Muir Lodge.
  • Head out fishing along the Kings River in Cedar Grove or hike to Mist Falls.
  • Take advantage of a free shuttle to key sites in Sequoia's Lodgepole and Giant Forest area.
  • In Sequoia, tour Crystal Cave, climb the trail up Moro Rock, stand before the towering Sherman Tree, and visit the Giant Forest Museum.
  • Take a scenic driving tour of some of the spectacular vistas in the parks.
  • Drive up to Hume Lake for fishing and swimming.
  • Children can participate in the Junior Ranger Program.

Key Sentinel Campground Regulations

  1. Dogs must always be on leash and always attended. Except for service dogs, dogs are not permitted on any park trails or on the summer shuttle.
  2. Follow park directions regarding bears and store food and scented items in bear-proof lockers, not in vehicles.
  3. Generators may only be operated from 9 AM to 9 PM. In Lodgepole and Dorst campgrounds, only operate generators from 8 AM to 11 AM and 5 PM to 8 PM.
