Stony Creek Campground

Stony Creek Campground is along the Generals Highway midway between Grant Grove and Lodgepole Village in Sequoia National Forest. Grant Grove is 15 miles to the northwest and Lodgepole is 13 miles to the southeast. The campground is divided into two sections - Upper and Lower Stony Creek - across the highway from one another. Vehicles over 22-feet long should enter the parks via Highway 180.

Lower Stony Creek Campground has 26 standard sites for RVs, trailers, or tents along with 21 tent-only sites mixed in among the standard sites. Two of the tent-only sites (#12 and #29) are walk-in sites. Facilities at Lower Stony Creek are slightly better than at Upper Stony Creek.

Across the highway, Upper Stony Creek has 24 sites which may reserved. The campground has vault toilets, and campsite fees are less than those at Lower Stony Creek.

The campground reservation website suggests that Stony Creek is near Hume Lake. It is about a 40 minute drive to Hume Lake from the campground.

Attractions and Activities

Many wonderful places await visitors to Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks. Campers at Stony Creek Campground are mid-way between Grant Grove and Lodgepole Village.

  • Drive over to Lodgepole Village and then take advantage of a free shuttle to key sites in Sequoia's Lodgepole and Giant Forest area.
  • Participate in Ranger-led Programs at Grant Grove, Cedar Grove, Wuksachi Lodge, and John Muir Lodge.
  • Drive down to Cedar Grove and try fishing along the Kings River or hike up to Mist Falls.
  • In Sequoia, visit Crystal Cave, climb the trail up Moro Rock, stand before the towering Sherman Tree, and visit the Giant Forest Museum.
  • Take a scenic driving tour of some of the spectacular vistas in the parks.
  • Drive down to Hume Lake for fishing and swimming.
  • Children can participate in the Junior Ranger Program.
  • Enjoy the annual Dark Sky Festival, August 23-24, 2019. Enjoy telescope viewings, solar observations, activities, and tours.

Key Stony Creek Campground Regulations

  1. To avoid problems with bears secure food and similar items in bear-proof lockers, not in vehicles. Use of the lockers is required.
  2. Generators may only be operated from 9 AM to 9 PM. In Lodgepole and Dorst campgrounds, only operate generators from 8 AM to 11 AM and 5 PM to 8 PM.
  3. Dogs (except service dogs) are not permitted on any park trails or on the summer shuttle.

Opening and closing dates of campgrounds are only estimates, usually dependent on weather conditions. Not all campsites can accommodate trailers or RVs of all lengths. If using a reservation website, check to be sure your vehicles will fit in the parking space for your campsite.
