Joseph D. Grant Park covers 10,882 acres in the hills east of San Jose. The summit of Mt. Hamilton is 11 miles farther up the road. Hikers and horseback riders especially enjoy the park with its 51 miles of trails. Mountain bikers are permitted on over 75% of the trails. Leashed dogs are permitted on the trails. Anglers gather around Grant Lake, fishing for bass, bluegill and other species.

Free Star Parties are offered once a month by the Halls Valley Astronomical Group at the Halley Hill Observatory Area or Telescope Row near the campground.

Joseph D. Grant Park has 2 main family campgrounds - Snell Campground and Halls Valley Campground. Snell Campground has 18 campsites while Halls Valley Campground has 22. Snell Campground is closed in the winter. All the sites can accommodate RVs, trailers, and tents. Most sites are well separated and have good shade.

Grant Park Campground also has Equestrian Campsites and Youth and Group Campsites.

Equestrian Campsite

Grant Park offers 8 equestrian campsites at the northern end of camping area. Campsites have two 12-foot or 16-foot square stalls, a fenced pasture, and watering trough along with other campground amenities.

Grant Park Group Campsites

Grant Park has a group camp at sites #19 and #20 which can accommodate up to 40 people and 8 vehicles. The camping fee is $140 per night. Group campsites have picnic tables and a BBQ pit and/or fire ring. Fires are not permitted on the ground. Wood gathering is not permitted. Fires in BBQ pits must be kept beneath the grate.

Grant Park also has a Youth Group Camping Area known as Woodlands. The site can accommodate up to 200 people. The fee is $365 per night. The gates close at sunset and there is no re-entry until morning.

Key Grant Park Campground Regulations

  1. Fires are only permitted in provided fire rings or BBQs.
  2. Quiet Hours: 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM. Campers should arrive before 10:00 PM.
  3. Dogs/Pets: Maximum of 2, on leash, always attended, confined to tent or vehicle at night
  4. Park Gates are open from 8:00 am to sunset. The entrance gates at Grant Park are locked at sunset. If you are camping, you must arrive before sunset.

General Camping Information

Opening and closing dates of campgrounds are only estimates, usually dependent on weather conditions. Not all campsites can accommodate trailers or RVs of all lengths. If using a reservation website, check to be sure your vehicles will fit in the parking space for your campsite.

In order to prevent the spread of invasive insects, obtain firewood locally.
