Elk Prairie Campground

Elk Prairie Campground is at the heart of Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park north of Eureka. Visitors to the park enjoy watching and photographing Roosevelt elk, walking along trails though old-growth redwoods, strolling along miles of scenic beach, and viewing wildflowers in bloom in late spring.

Elk Prairie Campground has 75 campsites. Twenty-one of the sites are designated for tents only. One site is labeled for RV or trailer only. The other 44 campsites can accommodate RVs, trailers, and tents. There is also a Hike & Bike site.

Reservations "strongly recommended": Reservations are available for camping dates from January through September.
October through December, all sites are first come, first served.
Booking Window: Reservations can be made from 2 days up to 6 months in advance of arrival date.

Key Elk Prairie Campground Regulations

  1. Dogs: Dogs are not allowed on any trails, but they are allowed on-leash on Cal-Barrel Road and Gold Bluffs Beach.
  2. Wood collecting is not allowed, including twigs and leaves.
  3. Generators may only be operated sparingly from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
  4. Bicycles are only allowed on paved roads and designated trails.
  5. Fern Canyon is open year-round from 9 AM until dusk (weather and trail conditions permitting). Seasonal footbridges are available only during the summer. Waterproof shoes and/or boots are recommended the rest of the year. Dogs & bikes are not permitted in Fern Canyon.
  6. Roosevelt elk seen in the park are wild animals and can be unpredictable. Keep a safe distance and never approach them.
