Humboldt Redwoods State Park

Humboldt Redwoods State Park stands out as one of the best places to enjoy the majesty of the redwood trees in the area. The famous Avenue of the Giants extends 32 miles along the Eel River as the road passes through grove after grove of stately trees. Stop at the Visitor Center near the town of Weott. If camping is in your plans, Hidden Springs Campground and Burlington Campground make excellent choices.

Patrick's Point State Park

Leave the redwood forests behind for a short time and camp along the coast at beautiful Patrick's Point State Park. Three nice campgrounds await visitors - Penn Creek Campground (a tents-only site), Abalone Campground, and Agate Campground. A trail from Agate Campground winds down to Agate Beach where you can search for, yes, agates. Trails in the park lead out to rocky promontories such as Wedding Rock. Within the park is Sumeg, a recreated Yurok Village. While camped at Patrick's Point take time to visit the nearby picturesque town of Trinidad.

Highlights of the Redwood Empire

The Redwood Empire is crowded with wonderful places to stop and explore. A two-week camping trip, moving from park to park every few days is a relaxing way to take in all the scenic delights of the region. Those with less time may want to focus on the highlights.

Prairie Creek State Park

Another day drive north to Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. Watch for wandering herds of Roosevelt elk. Drive out to Gold Bluffs Beach and hike up beautiful Fern Canyon. A scene from Jurassic Park II was filmed there.

Jedediah Smith State Park

Make Jedediah Smith State Park your base for exploring the northern section of the Redwood Empire. Wonderful campsites in the park are adjacent to easy trails that meander through the redwoods. The nearby Smith River is a nice place to cool off or perhaps to fish.

Several other parks are nearby. Visit Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park and Redwood National Park. Trails lead to rugged sections of the coast such as Wilson Beach and False Klamath Cove.

Some of the best camping in California is found spread throughout the Redwood Empire from Standish-Hickey Recreation Area in Mendocino County to Jedediah Smith State Park in Del Norte County.
