Carter Meadows Campground is a single-site group equestrian campground along a fork of the Salmon River in the Klamath National Forest. The campground is 13 miles west of the small community of Callahan on Highway 3, north of Trinity Lake. Campers at Carter Meadows find a variety of trailheads nearby with enjoyable riding trails leading both north and south to scenic mountain lakes and peaks.

Carter Meadows Campground can accommodate up to 25 people with 25 horses. The group site includes an area for dispersed tent or trailer camping. A number of tables and a large group BBQ are available. There are 3 sections of corrals of varying sizes: seven 1-horse corrals, three 2-horse corrals and three 3-4 horse corrals. Equestrians will also find a gated entrance, a gravel parking area for at least 10 vehicles, a hitch rack, and a mounting ramp.

Attractions near Carter Meadows Campground: Ride the Pacific Crest Trail from nearby Carter Meadows Summit. Riders can make a loop that includes Long Gulch Lake and Trail Gulch Lake or take the Pacific Crest Trail and connect to trails to Hidden Lakes or South Forks Lakes. Drive to Callahan and then south to Trinity Lake for boating, waterskiing, and fishing.

Opening and closing dates of campgrounds are only estimates, usually dependent on snow conditions. Not all campsites can accommodate trailers or RVs of all lengths. Check carefully on the website when you make your reservation to be sure your vehicle will fit your campsite.

Visitors to the Klamath National Forest features many scenic and interesting places to explore. Campers at Carter Meadows Campground are along a fork of the Salman River and near several great riding trails. Those venturing south can take advantage of all the recreation at beautiful Trinity Lake.

  • Spend time touring some of the local botanical areas such as Sutcliffe Creek (featuring old growth Port Orford-cedar), Rhododendron Patch, and Preston Peak Botanical Area (featuring a variety of conifers).

  2. Campers must bring certified weed-free feed for horses.
