Calpine Fire Lookout
Calpine Fire Lookout is a 3-story structure with external stairs. Only the top room, known as the observation cab, is available as a rental. The tower was erected in 1934 and used until 1975 as a fire lookout. The lookout is available year-round and is usually reserved for every night of the year. Visitors renting the lookout have spectacular views of the surrounding mountains, sunrises, sunsets and stargazing. The lookout is at 5,936 feet in elevation and is located about 35 miles north of Truckee. In the winter access is by snowshoes, skis, or snowmobiles.
Cabin Features
Calpine Fire Lookout cab is 14 feet by 14 feet. There is no electricity or water. Kitchen facilities consist of a dry sink and a propane stove/oven. Also in the lookout cab are a propane heater and lights. There are also a table and chairs, some cooking utensils, and pots and pans. Two twin beds provide for sleeping. Outside near the foot of the tower are a vault toilet, picnic table, and fire ring. Maximum occupancy is 4 people.
Nearby Activities
Nearby are hiking trails, roads for cycling, and mountain biking. A 20 mile drive leads to the wonderful Gold Lake region with many great lakes for kayaking and fishing, and scenic hiking trails.
