Cassel Campground

Cassel Campground is in the Hat Creek Valley east of Burney. The campground is operated by PG&E. The area is especially popular for fly fishing in Hat Creek and in nearby Crystal Lake and Baum Lake. McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park is only 12 miles to the north and Lassen Volcanic National Park is 34 miles to the south.

Cassel Campground offers 27 campsites for RVs, trailers, and tents. Pine trees provide nice shade for the campsites. PG&E's reservation website shows photos of each site. There is a 2-night minimum stay when making reservations.

Attractions near Cassel Campground: Hat Creek, Baum Lake and Crystal Lake are all great fishing spots. Car-top boats can be launched at Baum Lake and electric motors are permitted. Visit the Crystal Lake Hatchery.

Campground Reservation Information for 2024

PG&E has updated its reservations dates for 2024.
April 15, 8:00 AM - Reservations become available for camping dates one week or longer.
April 22, 8:00 AM - Reservations become available for stays less than one week.

Many PG&E campgrounds (except group campgrounds), including those with reservations available, also have some first-come, first-serve sites.

Attractions and Activities

Campers at Cassel Campground are only 12 miles away from McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park with all its great attractions.

  • View Burney Falls from the overlooks adjacent to the parking lot.
  • Hike the short trail down to the base of the falls or make a full loop around the falls using two bridges.
  • Drive to nearby Lake Britton for the day.
  • Rent patio boats, paddle boats, motor boats, canoes and kayaks, and paddle boards at Burney Falls Park Marina at Lake Britton.
  • Enjoy swimming in the lake.
  • Take a tour of the Visitor Center.
  • Attend one of the interesting ranger campfire programs, marshmallows included.
  • Join a guided paddle tour of Lake Britton.
  • Junior Ranger programs are available for ages 7 - 12.
  • Plan to be in the park for once-a-month Animal Rescue Saturdays beginning in late May and running through August. See rescued animals and learn about wildlife in the area.
