Lake McCumber Campground

Lake McCumber Campground is a quiet, little campground 40 miles east of Redding. Bypassed by many who are headed for nearby Lassen Volcanic National Park, Lake McCumber makes a relaxing retreat for families and anglers. The quarter-mile-long lake is open to non-motorized boating such as kayaks and canoes. (Lake McCumber is sometimes called MacCumber Reservoir.)

Lake McCumber Campground has 13 campsites. Eight of the sites can accommodate RVs, trailers, and tents, while the other 5 are walk-in sites for tent camping. Oaks provide ample shade at most sites. Campsites can be reserved.

Campground Reservation Information for 2024

PG&E has updated its reservations dates for 2024.
April 15, 8:00 AM - Reservations become available for camping dates one week or longer.
April 22, 8:00 AM - Reservations become available for stays less than one week.

Many PG&E campgrounds (except group campgrounds), including those with reservations available, also have some first-come, first-serve sites.

Attractions and Activities

Campers at Lake McCumber Campground enjoy good fishing in Lake McCumber and many wonderful adventures to the east in nearby Lassen Volcanic National Park.

  • Fish in Lake McCumber.
  • Visit the gallery at Mt. Lassen Art Center in Viola.
  • Venture into Subway Cave, located just north of the park. The cave is less than a half-mile long and reveals the underground world of a lava tube. Don't forget your flashlight.
  • Drive east and make an Auto Tour of nearby Lassen Volcanic National Park, stopping at sites such as Sulfur Works, Bumpass Hell Overlook, Devastated Area, and Chaos Crags.
  • Hike 5 miles up to the summit of Lassen Peak.
  • Participate in Ranger-led Programs at the park, including nature walks, campfire programs, Starry Night ranger-led programs, astronomy programs, and snowshoe hikes.
  • Tour Loomis Museum, which features historic photos of Lassen's last eruption.
  • Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center has wonderful exhibits about the park's volcanic activity. The Center includes both a cafe and a gift shop.
