Idlewild Campground is deep in the Klamath National Forest on the North Fork of the Salmon River, 20 miles west of the town of Etna and Highway 3. This remote campground is most popular with hikers and anglers. Several interesting trails are nearby, some leading to the north into the Marble Mountain Wilderness. Wading and swimming are available off the gravel bar when water levels in the Salmon River are safe.

Idlewild Campground offers 11 scenic and spacious campsites for RVs, trailers, and tents. Drinking water is available in the summer but may not be at other times of the year. All campsites are first-come, first-served.

Attractions near Idlewild Campground: Fish the Salmon River. Hike the trail leading north up the river to Lake of the Island. From Etna Summit hike on the Pacific Crest Trail. Take side trails off the PCT to Hogar Lake and Paynes Lake. Drive south for the day to Trinity Lake for boating, waterskiing, and fishing.

Opening and closing dates of campgrounds are only estimates, usually dependent on weather conditions. Not all campsites can accommodate trailers or RVs of all lengths.

In order to prevent the spread of invasive insects, obtain firewood locally.

Designated Accessible sites are usually reserved for people with disabilities who have a vehicle displaying an accessible parking placard or license plate.

Attractions and Activities

Visitors to the Klamath National Forest find many scenic places to enjoy. Those camped at Idlewild Campground are right on the North Fork Salmon River, but still near many popular attractions in the area.

  • Fish along the beautiful Klamath River.
  • Get your thrills river rafting on the On the Klamath River with an experienced rafting company: River Country Rafting, Klamath River Rafting
  • Visit the historic Fort Goff Cemetery along the Klamath River near Seiad Valley.
  • Hike on the famous Pacific Crest Trail using the Seiad Trailhead.
  • Hike from the Happy Camp Town Trailhead for views of the local area.
  • Saddle up for a trail ride starting at the Grider Creek Trailhead. The trail follows Grider Creek south for approximately 12 miles through old growth forest and eventually crosses the Kelsey National Recreation Trail.
  • Enjoy a picnic at the covered shelter at Grouse Gap Picnic Area. Take in views of Mt. Shasta.
  • Spend time touring some of the local botanical areas such as Sutcliffe Creek (featuring old growth Port Orford-cedar), Rhododendron Patch, and Preston Peak Botanical Area (featuring a variety of conifers).
  • Head out to the Humbug OHV Recreation Area.
