Calaveras Big Trees Attractions

For those camping at North Grove Campground, Calaveras Big Trees State Park has a wide range of activities and attractions for visitors.

  • Hike along trails through two main groves of ancient Giant Sequoias.
  • Follow hiking trails from meandering strolls through the big trees to vigorous explorations of remote portions of the park.
  • Take advantage of regular interpretive programs, lectures, nature walks, children's programs.
  • Spend a day picnicking along the Stanislaus River or Beaver Creek

  • Children ages 7-12 enjoy Junior Rangers activities.

Key North Grove Campground Regulations

  1. Wood collecting is not allowed, including twigs and leaves.
  2. Generators may only be operated from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
  3. Secure food in bear-proof lockers. Bears are present

North Grove Campground

North Grove Campground is located in the heart of Calaveras Big Trees State Park, close to the North Grove of Giant Sequoias and the Visitor Center. The relatively flat campground spreads through a mature conifer forest. An adjacent meadow is filled with wildflowers in the spring. Any time of year the edge of the meadow or the boardwalk across the meadow are great places to go star gazing.

Most of the 58 campsites in the North Grove Campground can accommodate tents, RVs, or trailers, but about a third are set aside as tent-only sites. Some campsites are close to Highway 4 and may experience some road noise.

Two Small Group Campsites are located inside North Grove Campground. And two Large Group Campsites are found across the highway.

Reservations Tips

Reservations for all Calaveras Big Trees State Park campsites are available from 2 days up to 7 months in advance. Reservations become available in one-month blocks on the first of the month, 7 months in advance. For example, on January 1 campsite reservations become available for all of July. Generally reservations can be made for camping from late May through November.

North Grove Small Group Campsites

The two group camps in the North Grove Campground are designated to hold up to 16 people and up to 4 vehicles. One site can accommodate tents, RVs or trailers; the other site is tent-only. The campsites have all the same amenities as a standard campsite in North Grove Campground. Reservations are required. (See link above.)
Fee: $75 per night ($80 on holiday weekends)

Large Group Campsites

Two large group campsites are situated across Highway 4 from the main part of the park. The Upper Site can accommodate up to 40 people and 15 vehicles, the Lower Site up to 60 people and 20 vehicles. The minimum number of people at either site is 9. Both sites accept tents, RVs or trailers. The campsites have similar amenities as a standard campsite in North Grove Campground. Reservations are required. (See link above.)

Lower Site - $200 per night ($250 on holiday weekends)
