Nelson Point Group Campground

Nelson Point Group Campground is located in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, on the Salt Creek Inlet off the Sacramento Arm of Shasta Lake. The campground is usually reserved by groups during the summer, but at other times it can be opened as an overflow campground for first come, first served camping. Nelson Point is open for walk-ins April through May. The campground is available for group rental on a reservation basis from early June through mid-September.

Nelson Point Group Campground has 8 campsites which can accommodate groups up to 60 people. However, it has no group cooking or campfire facilities. Campsites accept small RVs, trailer, and tents. When water levels are low, the campground is a long distance from the lake. The campground has no potable water. Locked Entry Gates to Group Campgrounds

The reservations website cautions: "Reservation holders must contact Shasta Recreation Office at least 1 week prior to arrival for a combination code to access campground; failure to do so could lead to a locked facility without access for a night or longer and no refund."



General Camping Information

Opening and closing dates of campgrounds are only estimates, usually dependent on weather conditions. Not all campsites can accommodate trailers or RVs of all lengths. If using a reservation website, check to be sure your vehicles will fit in the parking space for your campsite.

In order to prevent the spread of invasive insects, obtain firewood locally.

Shasta Lake is one of the most popular recreation lakes in the state. Campers at Nelson Point Campground find easy acccess to all the attractions of the lake.

  • Stop in at the Shasta Lake Visitor Center along Interstate 5 north of Redding for information about the local area.

Key Nelson Point Campground Regulations

  1. No amplified sound is permitted at the campground.
  2. To avoid problems with bears, store all food and similar items in bear-proof lockers, not in vehicles.
  3. Dogs must be kept on leash and attended at all times. At night they must be kept in a vehicle or tent.
  4. Help prevent spreading invasive pests by obtaining firewood locally.
