Richardson Grove State Park is home to some of the most magnificent stands of old-growth coastal redwoods in California. For visitors to the park there are plenty of interesting spots to explore and enjoy. Groups who camp at Dawn Redwood Group Campground enjoy a nice location close to th Eel River.

  • Stroll along the Exhibit Trail, Tourney Trail, and Settler's Trail.
  • In late summer when water levels are safe, swim or wade in the Eel River.
  • In the winter fish for steelhead trout.
  • Hike up to Panorama Point and Lookout Point.
  • Bring your camera as you visit some of the park's tallest redwoods such as Hartsook Giant.
  • Take a stroll through the walk-through tree, visit the bat tree, and learn from the tree-ring study conducted in 1933.
  • Follow the easy-going Race Track path which passes many unusual redwoods such as the chandelier tree with multiple trunks branching out.
  • Drop in at the Visitor Center and the nature store.
  • Join in Campfire programs, the Junior Rangers program, and guided nature walks.

ReserveCalifornia Reservations Tips

California State Parks' new reservation system - ReserveCalifornia - now allows campers "to make reservations 6 months to the day in advance of their arrival date." For example, on January 1 reservations can be made for stays beginning on July 1. In the past, reservations were released in one-month blocks. Now it is day by day. For months with fewer days than the month 6 months away, reservations for the remaining days will be released in a small cluster on the first of the next month. For example, on March 1 (because February is a short month) you can make reservations for stays beginning August 29-31. Read details at ReserveCalifornia.
